FOOD PROJECT

At a time when factory-farm food recalls are commonplace and schoolchildren are shocked to learn that vegetables grow in dirt, the goal of this project is to remind viewers that all food was once alive. If it wasn’t, it isn’t food. It is the life of the foods that we eat that sustains our own lives, and this continuum of life through eating that compels me to address food in my current work.

In preparation, I have been researching farming, gardening and food systems while conducting farm visits and forming friendships with local farmers. Because of the seasonal nature of real food, I have been drawing foods as they are available in the fields and pens of local gardens and farms, and am currently the artist in residence at Doko Farm.

"We don't need a law against McDonald's or a law against slaughterhouse abuse... All we need to do is empower individuals with the right philosophy and the right information to opt out en masse."
